Section 8 fraud is steadily on the rise. The types of frauds that are emerging in this category usually involve income misrepresentation and the misrepresentation of how many people will reside in the home and the income contributions they make to the overall household budget. The Department of Housing and Urban Development provides funds for families and/or individuals that can prove that their income is under a certain level. People that participate in Section 8 fraud often will not qualify for the housing program because they have failed to report their true income or to report the income of someone else that is living or has moved into their home. Some people that scam the Section 8 program will often have home businesses where they will work either "under the table" or fail to report the income to the proper taxing authorities. HUD Office of the Inspector General investigates matters involving Section 8 Fraud among other things.
